Who is Mary Baker Eddy?
Mary Baker Eddy was the discoverer and founder of Christian Science who lived in New England, USA.
Born in 1821 as the youngest child of a strong protestant family, she grew up loving the Bible but always suffered from poor health. In 1866 she slipped on ice and suffered severe internal injuries. Thought by those tending her to be close to death Mary asked for her Bible. As she read an account of one of Jesus healings the spiritual truth of his healing ministry began to dawn on her and she was immediately healed of all her injuries without medicine or surgery. She devoted the rest of her long life to deepening her understanding of God and man’s spiritual identity and how this heals. She herself went on to heal many people and taught others how to heal in the same way – solely through prayer.
Mrs Eddy realised that the “miracles” accomplished by Christ Jesus himself, and also by his followers, did not result from arbitrary intervention by God in human affairs but were the natural outcome of their understanding of an absolute, divine law that was, and is, available to all. The practice of healing through prayer lived on through the centuries but the spiritual rules which made it reliable in all circumstances remained to be rediscovered by Mary Baker Eddy and published in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She repeatedly proved the truth of Jesus’s words, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also” (John 12:14) and “ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”. (John 8:3)
